Let the Right One In

Feature Film | Tomas Alfredson
By Eric Schneider

A Swedish horror tale filled with atmosphere and emotion.

Let the Right One In is a rare cinematic creature--a horror movie that has received truly widespread critical acclaim. A tale filled with atmosphere, emotion, and just the right amount of shocking moments, the Swedish film follows a fragile, fair-haired 12-year-old boy named Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant), who lives in a bleak apartment complex with his mother. Regularly bullied at school, Oskar isn't very social, but he becomes intrigued by a mysterious new neighbor, an equally awkward girl his age named Eli (Lina Leandersson). As the bond between Oskar and Eli grows closer, murders and strange happenings lead the story in a fascinating supernatural direction, resulting in a film that shifts from art-house beauty to visceral tension without ever seeming uneven. Directed with grace and skill by Tomas Alfredson and adapted by writer John Ajvide Lindqvist from his own novel of the same name, Let the Right One In bears a title that alludes to vampire mythology and nods to a rare Morrissey song, perfectly revealing its impressively unusual pedigree.
