Jemaine Clement

Acting, Singing New Zealand Expatriate By Eric Schneider

A distinctly non-Australian actor and musician.

Known to some as the deep-voiced faux Australian in Outback Steakhouse ads, Jemaine Clement is better known as one half of the New Zealand comedy-rock duo Flight of the Conchords. Clement's productive partnership with Bret McKenzie (the quieter Conchord) has resulted in the group's HBO TV series and recordings for the esteemed Sub Pop label, both of which have received international cult adoration. Displaying a keen and eclectic ear for musical parody, Clement also excels at subdued, deadpan humor. ("Where did you get that preposterous hypothesis? Did Steve tell you that, perchance? Steve....") Outside of FOTC, Clement's burgeoning film career includes the Napoleon Dynamite-like movie Eagle vs Shark and the widely derided Gentleman Broncos--by actual Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, no less. Clement has also completed that popular comedian rite of passage--voicing an animated film (Despicable Me)--placing him in the company of many other popular funnymen of his generation.
