Hung

An edgy, dark comedy about a respectable guy who turns to prostitution to rebuild his life.

A cable series in the spirit of Weeds, Californication, and Breaking Bad, HBO's Hung is a dark sexual comedy centered on a strong lead performance by Thomas Jane as high school sports coach Ray Drecker. After getting divorced and accidentally burning down his house, Ray is soon lured into the world's oldest profession in order to rebuild his home and repair his broken family. Through a series of odd events, he ends up becoming a call guy, a male prostitute who eventually finds himself with, not one, but two pimps, mousy Tanya Skagle (Jane Adams) and elegant cutthroat Lenore Bernard (Rebecca Creskoff). The series ably moves between playful comedy and much more serious drama, a trademark of Oscar-winner Alexander Payne (Sideways), who serves as an executive producer and directed the pilot episode. At its heart, the show is really about Ray's relationship with women, from his pimps and clients (which include a very pregnant woman) to his ex-wife (Ann Heche), daughter (Sianoa Smit-McPhee), and hot-to-trot neighbor (Alanna Ubach). Edgy and not afraid to take risks, Hung also comments on the American economic and educational systems while featuring plenty of broad humor, and, of course, nudity.
