Curb Your Enthusiasm
TV Series | Larry David By Eric SchneiderAgitation and awkwardness abound.
Ah, it's rough being Larry David—millions in the bank from his Seinfeld rights, a remarkably patient and understanding wife, comfy L.A. living, yadda yadda yadda. What's there to be so upset about? A lot, apparently, since HBO's long-running Curb Your Enthusiasm features a slightly fictionalized David in a perpetual post-Seinfeld funk. Now you might think that following the real-life template for George Constanza during season after season of aggressively uncomfortable social interactions might get to be a bit much. Well, it does. But, in small doses, Enthusiasm is truly exceptional television that gleefully riffs on wholly inappropriate humor to hilarious effect. Try watching an entire season in a few sittings, and you might get as tightly wound and irritated as David. But taken in small relatively small amounts—you know, like salt—Curb Your Enthusiasm is truly something to savor. Oh, and if you're guessing that David mellows when he finally gets the Seinfeld gang back together, think again—it's just another gloriously frustrating scenario for Larry David to be Larry David. He'll keep on grumbling and raging, and, like fender-bender spectators, we'll continue to watch, oddly entranced.
