Colin Farrell
Restless Irish Actor By Eric SchneiderIreland's raucous acting export.
An Irish actor that rose to prominence after his affecting lead turn in director Joel Schumacher's 2000 wartime drama, Tigerland, Colin Farrell warmed up to Hollywood stardom quite quickly. Despite his bad-boy reputation and sometimes-questionable selection of projects (American Outlaws, anyone?), Farrell has thrived by working both with and against his lovable-rogue persona. Shifting between big-budget fare and indie productions, Farrell has collaborated with renowned directors such as Steven Spielberg, Michael Mann, and Woody Allen, but he often shines brightest in relatively under-the-radar films, most notably The New World, Terrence Malick's pensive take on the Pocahontas tale, and Martin McDonagh's quirky comedic thriller, In Bruges. The latter movie deservedly garnered Farrell a Golden Globe in 2008, adding to his artistic credibility. In subsequent years, Farrell has been more discerning with his roles, turning up in the lauded Crazy Heart with a low-key supporting performance and taking on a major part in The Way Back, Peter Weir's expansive POW film.
