Christian Bale
Intense British Actor By Eric SchneiderA passionate cinematic shapeshifter.
Renowned for his fiery and restless roles, Christian Bale started out as a child actor and managed the rare feat of becoming more famous and in demand as he grew older. Bale first won accolades in 1987 for his impressive turn as the young protagonist in Steven Spielberg's expansive World War II drama, Empire of the Sun. In the late ‘90s, the British performer developed a devoted fan following by appearing in a number of well-received indie films, with Bale's popularity hitting a new peak after his chillingly composed lead performance in American Psycho. More prominent Hollywood movies followed, and, in 2005, Bale donned the cape and cowl for Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan's reboot of the comic-book franchise, as well as its acclaimed sequel, The Dark Knight. Known for his intensity on and off screen (Remember his infamous Terminator Salvation set rant?), Bale routinely displays an extreme level of commitment to his craft, both emotionally and physically, notably losing significant weight for numerous projects, including the dramas The Machinist and The Fighter, which garnered him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Able to thrive in both blockbuster fare and prestige productions helmed by revered auteurs, Bale is inarguably one of Hollywood's most intriguing screen stars.
