Archer

TV Series |

James Bond with mommy issues.

Emmy-nominated voice actor H. Jon Benjamin leads the cast in this sharply satirical spy sitcom as Sterling Archer, a debonair, but dopey, secret agent. While the animated series follows Archer on globetrotting adventures and sexual misadventures, it mainly focuses on the saucy interpersonal drama that unfolds at the unwieldy undercover agency that is ISIS. The supporting ensemble is stocked with a number of cult-adored comedians, including Jessica Walter as Archer's domineering mother/handler, Aisha Tyler as his fellow agent/frustrated ex-girlfriend, Chris Parnell as her new beau/oft-flustered ISIS comptroller, and Judy Greer as a trash-talking secretary who frequently fantasizes aloud about being murdered. Purposely set in an ambiguous age where a 1960s fashion sense mingles with 21st-century technology and social issues, this post-modern parody often invokes pop-culture references that gleefully enhance the show's fanboy appeal. Boldly irreverent, each episode tackles thorny hot topics (including sexual harassment, homophobia, and diversity hires) with subversive wit and unrelenting raunchiness that makes Archer as gut-bustingly hilarious as it is wickedly smart. Ultimately, Archer seamlessly blends the fast-paced excitement of the espionage genre with the iconoclastic humor that FX has become known for, making a heady cocktail that's as provocative as it is uproarious.
