9
Feature Film | Shane Acker By Eric SchneiderThe best CGI-animated post-apocalyptic rag-doll movie ever.
Without a doubt, 9 is the best CGI-animated post-apocalyptic rag-doll movie ever, and not just because it's the only one. Director Shane Acker's earlier short film of the same name impressively sets up the dark industrial aesthetic that the feature expands upon. Produced in part by Tim Burton, who is clearly (and admittedly) a strong influence on Acker, 9 masterfully draws viewers into a bleak, human-free world where life-crushing machine-monsters face resistance only from a fragmented band of resourceful little burlap warriors, most notably the passionate 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood) and the fierce 7 (Jennifer Connelly). Although weighed down at times by its slightly clunky plot, the film presents visuals that are truly stunning, and, like its handmade "stitchpunk" heroes, it manages to channel an endearing ramshackle kind of magic.
