Happy Birthday, Ray Harryhausen!
Legendary special effects master Ray Harryhausen turns 92 today. Inspired by King Kong as a teenager, Harryhausen became obsessed with special effects, breaking new ground in the '50s and '60s with his use of stop-motion animation and other pioneering effects in fantasy films such as Jason and the Argonauts and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. His detailed models and figurines of skeleton warriors, ferocious sea creatures, and mythological beings inspired terror and awe, and his imaginative and fantastic vision influenced a generation of filmmakers.
Though later films like 1981's Clash of the Titans straddled the line between charismatic and cheesy, Harryhausen's contributions to the world of film were finally recognized with an honorary Oscar in 1992.
