Evil Dead remake will be bloody terrifying
The Evil Dead franchise (the original, Evil Dead II, and Army of Darkness, 1981-1992) is campy. It delights in its own campiness. The tagline for Army of Darkness ran "Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas." The 80's revealed in their 80's-ness. But, square-jawed star Bruce Campbell, the original Ash, is producing a remake, set to release in April 2013.
At the New York Comic Con earlier this month, he announced in a panel that "We know what you need. You need horror with blood flowing down the streets. We know you need it." Judging from the official trailer released this week, Evil Dead is going to give fans just that. The trailer is restricted to mature audiences only, and the title card announcing this isn't even MPAA green, it's red. While only one character hacks off his own limb and replaces in with a power tool, in this remake, everyone seems to be slicing themselves up. There's no "hail to the king baby," only "where's your art film now, baby."
Campbell seems to delight in the horrific, bloody sequences, replacing his quotable, B-horror lines from the original. The remake is directed by Fede Alvarez, a Uruguayan filmmaker. The new Ash is a girl named Mia, played by Jane Levy, of Suburgatory. The other teenagers holed up in the cabin will be played by other relative newcomers Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore, and Lou Taylor Pucci.
Watch at your own risk.
