The Mountain Goats announce new album
The ever-prolific John Darnielle has announced a new Mountain Goats album: Transcendental Youth will be out October 2 via Merge Records. Written just after the birth of Darnielle's second child -- in his blog post about the new album, he describes writing melodies with one hand on the piano and the other cradling his son -- the album nonetheless apparently goes even further than usual into the singer-songwriter's dark obsessions and character studies of people on the brink. On the other hand, the album also includes a horn section, so who knows what the final effect will be.
Early preorders of the album will be accompanied by a seven-inch single of two exclusive songs, recorded live and cut directly to vinyl without further processing.
