Zooey Deschanel to star in Coal Miner's Daughter on Broadway
God bless Loretta Lynn but I'm sure lots of her fans are wondering 'what was she thinking?' when she got on stage at a concert and announced that It Girl Zooey Deschanel had been tapped to portray her in the stage version of Coal Miner's Daughter. Sure she's a talented singer-songwriter and actress, but when you think about the hardscrabble rural upbringing of a Kentucky-born country singer, Deschanel's wide-eyed perky energy seems a strange fit.
The legendary singer made the announcement herself at a recent concert, as she had done back in 1979 when Sissy Spacek was chosen to portray her in the Oscar-winning film version. As crazy as it sounds, it may not be the puzzling casting decision involving the female half of the indie pop duo She and Him. Deschanel has also been tapped to star as doomed singer Janis Joplin in a biopic that seems to have gone into permanent development.
