Webby Awards winners announced
Every industry needs its award show and the Internet is no different. Now in it's 16th year, the Webbys honors the best of the web, which, considering they received nearly 10,000 entries, is no easy task. Divided into roughly 70 categories, they recognize everything from apps, to entertainers, social networks, and any person or organization doing innovative things online.
One of the biggest winners announced was comedian Louis C.K, who made a cool one million dollars seemingly overnight after eschewing the typical distribution model and selling downloads of his sold-out performance at the Beacon Theater for a mere $5.
Other highlights include breakout stars, S**t Girls Say, The 99%, and the behemoth picture sharing program, Instagram. There were some more obvious winners like Pinterest for social media, Spotify and Pitchfork for music, and the HBO Connect for television. Björk won Webby Artist of the Year for her multimedia album release of music/app Biophilia.
Patton Oswalt will host the awards ceremony on May 21 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Or as they call it: IRL (in real life).
