Track of the Day: Slow Country, "Yes You Have"
We've mentioned lately that there's a newfound interest in the pre-punk sounds of '70s classic rock in some indie circles. Joining Critical Mob faves like Kurt Vile and The War On Drugs is Slow Country, the Queens-based duo of singer-guitarists Boyd Shropshire and Chase King. Shropshire, in fact, has played in Vile's backing band the Violators, not to mention a tenure in the largely-overlooked '00s indie kids Human Television, whose "Saw You Walking By" still gets a lot of play around the office.
Maybe it's that direct connection to Kurt Vile that makes his spectral, narcotized take on old-school FM rock loom so large over "Yes You Have." However, Neil Young is right up there next to him, especially since his Harvest album cover is none too subtly recalled by the sleeve to the duo's debut album The Late Great Slow Country (out now on Wonderland Archives Records). Whatever the connection, this pedal steel-tinged ballad makes the perfect easy introduction to a springtime Friday morning.
