There is a book about The Smiths, it's out, and this time it's personal
The Smiths are the subject of A Light That Never Goes Out, a new extensive book by author Tony Fletcher, which should come as a relief to mopey teenagers everywhere who are tired of reading the same Oscar Wilde anthology for the millionth time.
According to the website of NYC's famous Strand Bookstore (a.k.a. the only bookstore in NYC that isn't primarily a communal bathroom for the homeless), Fletcher distinguishes his Smiths tome from the many, many, many other Smiths tomes currently on shelves by virtue of being, "granted rare access not only to members of The Smiths, but also to never before seen letters and personal memos." So in case you ever wanted to know what was on Andy Rourke's grocery list from 1986, wait no longer ("Toilet paper, hair gel, Yukon Gold potatoes, heroin").
The Strand is more or less your one-stop shop for all things A Light That Never Goes Out this month, having recently hosted a conversation between Fletcher and notable bald screamer Matt Pinfield. If you missed that one sided yell-fest for whatever reason, you can still order a signed copy of the book on the Strand's website. It's perfect for the sensitive Latino greaser in your life this holiday season!
