The 2012 Emily Dickinson First Book Award winner
Poet Hailey Leithauser has claimed the 2012 Emily Dickinson First Book Award. The award, which is given by the Poetry Foundation and only presented occasionally, is awarded to an American poet over the age of 40 who has yet to release a book-length manuscript. The 57-year-old winner has been writing poetry since the late 1970's but gave it up for several decades. Since returning to it in 2000, she has had work published in a number of poetry journals. In 2004 she was the recipient of the Discovery/The Nation Award.
Leithauser's first full length collection, Swoop, will be published by Graywolf Press in October 2013. She will also receive $10,000 for winning the prize and will be honored at the Pegasus Awards ceremony on June 11th.
