Site of the Week: remember your childhood with I’m Remembering

Remember Caboodeles? My Little Pony? Shrinky Dinks? Bill Nye The Science Guy

Publicist-cum-producer-cum-comedian Hilary Buckholtz is a master of inducing “Oh my God I forgot about that!”s from the followers on her tumblr, I'm Remembering. At once a memory marketplace for retro goods and a collection of tributes to the products and TV characters and fashions that shaped Generation Y, I’m Remembering is the ultimate compilation of pop culture “nostalgery” from the '80s and early '90s.

More than just a compilation of retro paraphernalia, though, I’m Remembering also shares quotes from movie classics like Heathers, gifs of '90s hip-hop divas, or re-blogs articles from other sites such as The Hairpin's interview with a former Sweet Valley High ghostwriter. While the majority of the site features images of old school snacks like Dunkaroos and Jell-O pudding pops, it also has an interactive component, encouraging people to remember together. One commenter asked a pretty deep question for a tumblr that seems mostly to graze the surface of the millennial experience: “What do you think it says about our generation that all of our strongest memories are tied to these, mostly worthless commercial items and nothing of true value?”

Maybe it is a little sobering to realize that what essentially unites Gen Y is a series of now-obsolete goods, but I"m Remembering lets people remember together and perhaps give that experience more meaning now — or at the very least, it’s entertaining.
