Singer/songwriter Christopher Owens leaves Girls

We've got some bad news for you this Monday afternoon: Girls frontman Christopher Owens has announced that he's leaving the band. Per the band's official Twitter account:

"Dear all, This may come as a surprise to many & has been an issue of much thought for me. My decision was not easy to make. I am leaving Girls. My reasons at this time are personal. I need to do this in order to progress. I will continue to write & record music. More will be announced soon. I thank you all for everything."

Early in the band's career, much was made of Owens' unique backstory. Born into the fundamentalist religious group Children of God, he travelled the world during the first 16 years of his life before fleeing and seeking refuge in Amarillo, Texas. Years later, after playing catch-up with nearly all American culture (the Children of God rejected most modern lifestyles) he made his way to California, where he met bassist/producer Chet "JR" White and formed Girls.

There's been no official word from White, so at this point, we're unsure if Girls are done for good. At the very least, it's encouraging to hear that Owens will continue to write and record music. We leave you with the music video for Girls' indie rock anthem, "Lust For Life".
