Public Image Ltd. preview reunion EP

Appearing on the indie-friendly BBC Radio 6 Monday morning, John Lydon gave a sneak peek of the Public Image Ltd. reunion album due out sometime in late spring. A surprisingly poppy reggae-tinged song, "One Drop" has only a hint of the aggressive post-punk clatter of the band's key work from the late '70s and early '80s. Although, to be fair, wouldn't a record that sounded as belligerent as Metal Box or The Flowers of Romance sound a touch contrived coming from the now-middle-aged TV personality that Lydon has unapologetically become?

That said, Lydon himself is in solid voice, and guitarist Lu Edmonds (formerly of The Damned and 3 Mustaphas 3), bassist Scott Firth and drummer Bruce Smith undeniably have the basic contours of PiL's dub-inspired wobble down pat. Public Image Ltd. will release "One Drop" on a 4-track EP this Record Store Day, April 21. It will be the band's first release in 20 years, since 1992's disappointing That What Is Not.
