Photo of the Day: Kubrick rides the subway
Those familiar with the films of the late Stanley Kubrick will have noticed his obsession with the composition of his shots. It should come as no surprise then that the native New Yorker began life as a photojournalist, shooting photo essays for newspapers and lifestyle magazines like Look.
Passengers Reading in a Subway Car, taken from a 1946 series is an understated gem that looks as if it could be a still from one of his early black and white films. In a packed car each of the elegantly attired passengers is an island of solitude absorbed in the newspapers in front of them or simply staring ahead seemingly unaware of the camera's presence. More of the shots can be seen here.
