Photo of the Day: Converging Territories #30, Lalla Essaydi
In an overlapping series of symbols, "Converging Territories #30" confronts us with associations political, global, and spiritual. Photographer Lalla Essaydi, whose mixed media work is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institute, is a Moroccan-born, NYC-based artist whose work is no less elegant for its subversive content, and this image is undeniable proof of it.
The political and feminist context is not subtle, but the finely-crafted symbolism transcends political tract to propose questions of generational divides, innocence of youth, or futility of individuality against a background of proscribed patterns. It's both universal and timely.
