New animated Wilco video captures a Maurice Sendak essence
Wilco recently released a new animated video for “Sunloathe” off The Whole Love, directed by Peter Glantz and illustrator Nathaniel Murphy. As such, the video has a very picture book feel -- specifically, a Maurice Sendak/Where The Wild Things Are sort of aesthetic, becoming increasingly more psychedelic as it develops.
A mushroom trip inside a children's book, if you will.
The opening scene shows a gang of cats (pitchforks and torches in tow) taking over a small cottage in the woods inhabited by a lone creature, causing it to flee and embark on some sort of 1960’s-style adventure. The video continues with the naïve and curious being searching out a place of refuge.
