Video of the Day: Mayer Hawthorne
This video seems an appropriate choice for the weekend. Filled with spandex clad dancers and geri curls, Mayer Hawthorne pays tribute in his new video, "A Long Time", to The New Dance Show on Detroit's Channel 68.
Detroit's own version of Soul Train, the show was apparently Hawthorne's favorite after-school program. Which is certainly a step up from most of the finger-wagging dreck that most children of the 1970s were subjected to. For this Detroit DJ-turned-singer, his hometown influenced a lot more than just his music videos. His deep love of Motown led him to his current new-school soul sound, and it's what got him signed to Stones Throw Records in the first place.
While we doubt he'll be gracing the stage with any of the splits as seen below, it's always important to aspire to something.
