Matador Records pays tribute to classic UK compilation

30 years ago, British indie Cherry Red Records released their classic sampler Pillows and Prayers. Widely recognized as one of the all-time great compilation LPs, Pillows and Prayers sold for a measly 99 pence (roughly $1.50) and introduced over 120,000 curious buyers to indie heroes like Everything But the Girl, Felt, Eyeless In Gaza, The Monochrome Set and Thomas Leer, among others.

This week, Matador Records tips its cap to this classic with the release of its own new budget-priced label sampler, Intended Play 2012. A 12" vinyl LP retailing through Matador's online store [http://store.matadorrecords.com/new-releases/inteded-play-2012 ] for the astonishingly low price of $1.80 (plus shipping), Intended Play 2012 comes complete with a black-and-white cover photo of a young child playing with a bubble pipe, much like the one on the original Pillows and Prayers.

The album features 11 tracks, including previously unreleased songs by Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo (a preview of his upcoming solo album, due in March), Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, The Young, Ceremony, Tanlines and Perfume Genius. Tunes by Critical Mob faves Kurt Vile, Girls and Esben and the Witch are also included. Grab one while you can.
