Mashup of the Day: Whole Lotta Helter Skelter
Yes, we know, mash-ups had their moment in the sun a full decade ago, and started dying off about the time everyone realized that no one was going to beat the unholy combo of "Bootylicious" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Not that there haven't been great ones since: remember, we all discovered Danger Mouse when he fused Jay-Z's The Black Album with The Beatles' The White Album. But speaking of the white album, its grooves have spawned the best mash-up we've heard in years: "Whole Lotta Helter Skelter."
Fusing Paul McCartney's edge-of-hysteria vocals to Jimmy Page's undeniable guitar riff and then decorating the mix with perfectly-deployed bits of both songs, British remixer Soundhog has created something rare in the world of mash-ups. This isn't "funny" or "clever," and it doesn't "deconstruct popular culture." It simply rocks like a mother. And sometimes, that's exactly what you want.
