Kerouac Attack!
Hot on the heels of the recently released trailer for On the Road comes an announcement from the Merrimack Repertory Theater in Lowell, Massachusetts that they'll be putting on eight readings (in conjunction with the University of Massachusetts) of Beat Generation-icon Jack Kerouac's lone play, the aptly titled Beat Generation.
Originally written in 1957 and no doubt lost in the hoopla surrounding the release that same year of On the Road, the play languished in a warehouse in New Jersey until it was rescued in 2004. Despite such stepchild-like treatment, Kerouac did appear to have a sweet spot for it, describing the play to his literary agent at the time as "a comedy but with overtones of sadness and with some pretty fine speeches."
There's no word yet from Merrimack on who'll be reading or performing in their production but with the recent US release of Kerouac's lost first novel, The Sea is My Brother, and the growing anticipation for the film of On the Road, you'd be wise to get tickets as soon as you can.
