Hot Chip covers Prince for BBC Radio

During promotions for their new album, In Our Heads, the British-based electronica outfit Hot Chip stopped by BBC Radio studios and covered the prince of purple himself.

After teasing a new track, "Look at Where We Are", they seamlessly segue into, "If I Was Your Girlfriend" from Prince's hit album, Sign "O" the Times. The transition comes as a surprise, but as soon as you hear the opening lines of the song, it's apparent whose territory they're crossing into. They pull off the overall mashup effortlessly, giving the 1987 hit the reggae treatment with the addition of some steel drums.

Lead singer, Alexis Taylor, channels the same effeminate vocal quality that the song requires, albeit in a much more relaxed manner. Hot Chip's June 11th album release is right around corner, so we can only hope they'll bring the cover on the road with them. Tune in here at the 1:19:50 mark to hear the track performed live.
