Gary Oldman signs on to RoboCop reboot

The forthcoming cinematic return to the RoboCop franchise keeps getting more interesting, with The Hollywood Reporter announcing that Gary Oldman has joined the cast of the sci-fi/action movie. Starring Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) in the lead and directed by Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha (Bus 147), the film will feature Oldman as RoboCop's creator, a character not in previous installments.

Having recently garnered acclaim for his role in the espionage drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Oldman is no stranger to shifting between prestige projects and more straightforward genre fare. (See his entertaining scenery-chewing turns in Red Riding Hood and The Book of Eli.) In the meantime, the ever-restless Oldman will appear in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises and John Hillcoat's Lawless, continuing a impressive streak that he's been on since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
