Elmore Leonard revisits "Justified" character

Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is back! Not just on Season 3 of the excellent Justified, but in the latest novel by superstar crime writer Elmore Leonard, Raylan.

Great novels often inspire movies and television shows, but rarely has the influence of a great television show on a major novelist been so clear. Givens, a supporting player in the novels Pronto and Riding the Rap, has not been seen in Leonard's work in about ten years, when Leonard published the short story, "Fire in the Hole."

That story inspired the pilot for Justified-starring Timothy Olyphant as Givens-which Leonard executive produces. More evidence of the television show's influence: Boyd Crowder, Givens' rival/ally played by Walton Goggins on Justified, was killed by Givens in Leonard's short story, but is a major character in his new novel.
