Documentary follows Broadway understudies

Think of all of the plays you have ever seen, read, or heard about. Think of all the actors, auditions, rehearsals, and performances. Now think about dedicating every day of your life to something you may never be recognized for. This is the life of an understudy. A trusted actor who is fully capable of performing a role they will most likely never get the chance to play.

Stephanie Rigg’s new documentary, The Standbys, follows the lives of three Broadway understudies chasing a dream they may never attain. It is passion and thick skin that keeps these actors fighting for their chance to be under the spotlight as opposed to backstage.

The Standbys will premiere at the Tony Awards Film Series on May 12.
