Disney goes post-punk with Joy Division-inspired t-shirt
In 2005, UK indie icons Half Man Half Biscuit satirized post-punk fetishism with their song "Joy Division Oven Gloves." A few years later, Nike unveiled a concept shoe (never produced) riffing off the iconic cover of Joy Division's 1978 debut Unknown Pleasures. And now, you can finally celebrate everyone's favorite gloomy Mancs and the perpetually sunny star of Walt Disney's classic cartoons at the same time!
Seriously. On sale now at the Disney Store website is the Mickey Mouse "Waves" t-shirt, currently described thusly: "This Waves Mickey Mouse Tee incorporates Mickey's image within the graphic of the pulse of a star. That's appropriate given few stars have made bigger waves than Mickey!" Interestingly, the first draft of this text specifically mentioned that the graphic was inspired by the Peter Saville-designed Unknown Pleasures cover, but as of Tuesday morning, that line is missing.
Oh, and they're also all sold out. Unsurprisingly, "sold out" was also a common phrase on the seemingly hundreds of Facebook posts and tweets concerning the shirt in the last 24 hours, mostly from aging post-punk fans outraged that Joy Division is now mainstream enough to be co-opted by Disney.
