Disappears introduce new drummer, Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley
Chicago indie rockers Disappears preview their upcoming third album Pre Language (out March 1 on Kranky Records) with the online release of opening track "Replicate." Pre Language is the band's first album with new drummer Steve Shelley, on loan while his own band Sonic Youth is on hiatus (possibly permanently).
It's worth remembering that Sonic Youth made a tremendous leap forward when Shelley joined the band back in 1985: his aggressive but refined attack helped turn the arty dilettantes into a proper rock band. If "Replicate" is any indication, he's helped Disappears step up their game as well, his propulsive thump giving the song a sense of tension that their previous records have often lacked.
Disappears will be celebrating the album's release with a brief west coast tour with San Francisco's Fresh and Onlys, starting in Vancouver on February 18 and ending in San Diego on February 25.
