Debbie Reynolds to play Liberace's mother

For a man who declared to be retiring and/or taking a sabbatical (depends on what interview he's giving), director Steven Soderbergh has continued being busy. The filmmaker's male stripper comedy Magic Mike will be unleashed into theaters at the end of the month, and his long-planned HBO biographical movie on the life of the legendary entertainer Liberace, Behind the Candelabra, is heating up its pre-production.

Debbie Reynolds, who is of course a Hollywood showbiz legend in her own right, has now been cast to play Liberace's mother, Francis. Michael Douglas will be playing the famed extravagant showman and Matt Damon has been cast to play Liberace's lover, Scott Thorson. The movie, which was originally planned as a theatrical release through Warner Bros., switched its handling to HBO and is supposed to start filming this summer. The script, written by Richard LaGravenese, is based on Thorson's notorious memoir Behind the Candelabra: My Life with Liberace, which was published in 1988.

The story has it all really: romantic rivalry, jealousy, Las Vegas tackiness, and plenty of decadent scenery for all of these acting vets to tear through.
