Cover of the Day: The Sea and Cake, "Sound and Vision"

Covering David Bowie can be a tricky proposition (and usually a losing one), but Chicago's most tasteful indie-jazzsters The Sea and Cake manage to do right by this Bowie classic. The original 1977 version of this song-from Bowie's classic Low album-was buoyed along by one of Bowie's funkiest basslines and a batch of shiny synth sounds, while The Sea and Cake turn the song into a frothy concoction of shimmery guitar lines with a computerized rhythm section. Even though the Sea and Cake sometimes favor subtle restraint to the point of forgettableness in their own work, this take on Bowie is the perfect marriage of styles---four and a half blissed out minutes of ephemeral indie-pop that doesn't in any way diminish what is arguably one of Bowie's catchiest tunes.
