Cover of the Day: Grizzly Bear
Following up on this morning's post of The Crystals' controversial 1962 single "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)," as featured in last night's Mad Men episode, here's a live version as performed by Grizzly Bear.
A staple of Grizzly Bear's live set since 2007, the Brooklyn outfit have released the song twice: this studio take on the covers-and-outakes EP Friend and a later live version recorded during a session at California's KCRW and releasedas the flipside of a 7" single.
Grizzly Bear's version, intended in part as a commentary on the problem of domestic violence in the gay community, is no less disturbing than the Crystals' semi-suppressed original.
