Cover of the Day: Fever Ray does Peter Gabriel
Dave Shim's Critical 5 list of current female electronic musicians this week got me returning to my Fever Ray records. Though I love The Knife -- there were few singles more perfect than "Heartbeats" released in the 2000s -- I'm thinking that the more esoteric, spartan sound of the Fever Ray album is more to my taste. As odd as Karin Dreijer Andersson can be in her Fever Ray persona -- I can still see that melting-face-mask awards acceptance speech in my nightmares -- the Fever Ray songs just sound more personal and intimate to me. That's certainly the case with this gorgeous 2010 cover of Peter Gabriel's "Mercy Street." Andersson harmonizes with herself in both the voices she uses for Fever Ray -- her natural voice and the pitch-shifted androgynous baritone -- over an electronic backdrop that strips down Gabriel's arrangement drastically yet somehow maintains its eerie majesty.
