Cloud Atlas adaptation coming soon
David Mitchell's expansive and layered 2004 novel, Cloud Atlas, is undeniably ambitious, so it's only fitting that its upcoming film adaptation is following suit. Not only does the movie have three directors--German auteur Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski siblings, Andy and Lana (formerly Larry)--it also features an intriguing cast that includes Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon, Halle Berry, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, and Hugh Grant, among others.
The latter actor recently talked to Empire magazine and revealed that he plays six different characters who are "incredibly evil" in the time-hopping tale, including a bloodthirsty cannibal. It looks like the typically amiable Grant has truly traveled far from Notting Hill.
So will the movie come together as a surprisingly cohesive tale, or will it be another epic mess like Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain? If the production stays on track, we may find out later this year.
