Bobby Womack is the Bravest Man in the World
It's always interesting to see what happens when iconic musicians work with other artists completely outside of their musical comfort zone. The result often ends up a whole new sub-species of music and the audience benefits from both musicians stretching their creative muscles. It worked with Johnny Cash and Rick Rubin, Gil Scott-Heron and Richard Russell, and Marianne Faithfull and Beck, and now soul legend Bobby Womack is getting a similar makeover from Damon Albarn.
This is Womack's first full-length album of original songs since his Resurrection album from 1994. Making use of his powerhouse vocals, layering them over classical strings, a slick beat and even a vocoder, "The Bravest Man in the Universe", has the feel of a remix within an original song.
The album is set to release on June 12 of this year; just shortly after it was announced in March that Womack was diagnosed with colon cancer. Despite his illness, Womack will continue to tour and perform the new album this summer.
