Billy Corgan speaks out on the state of the music industry

No stranger to controversy and self-admitted, "pain in the ass", Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan spoke at this year's SXSW about where the music industry is heading.

As part of Mashable's Revolution Series, the outspoken singer basically called "bull" on the industry and the way both music executives and fans treat musicians of today. With a new album coming out next month, Corgan knows both what it's like to have experienced success as well as the pitfalls of selling a record today.

From Lana del Rey to Beyonce, to "the kid using Pro Tools in the basement", Corgan talks about the different models of success in the industry, and how artists have to have more than just a viral video to sustain a long-term career. He encourages up-and-coming artists to become masters of all mediums and to use technology to gain and interact with fans. Besides pointing the finger at the "man", Corgan also stresses the importance of fans to support the things they love-- which, in the time of mp3 downloads and Spotify, seems to be the most important call-to-action of all.
