Athena Festival celebrates women in film
The dearth of women in prominent positions in Hollywood film production is an ongoing embarrassment. The Athena Film Festival, now in its third year, has its own unique way of addressing this issue, honoring industry standouts like Moneyball producer Rachael Horovitz, director Dee Rees (Pariah), and Diablo Cody, while screening a lineup of recent international features and strong documentaries featuring women who find ways to empower themselves.
This year's highlights include Gloria: In Her Own Words with Ms. Steinem in attendance; Wish Me Away, a documentary about out lesbian country singer Chely Wright, followed by a Q&A between the filmmakers and renowned documentarian Chris Hegedus; and Off the Rez,, a rousing sports documentary about a Umatilla Indian Reservation girls high school basketball coach. If past years are any gauge, post-screening discussions should be refreshingly candid and far-ranging.
The festival, hosted by Barnard College in upper Manhattan, runs February 9-12.
