Animal House Coming To Broadway

Continuing the trend of appropriating cult-fandom tastes for the overblown spectacle of Broadway musicals, Universal Pictures Stage Productions has announced plans to adapt the 1978 frat-house gross-out comedy Animal House for the stage.  On board is a team sure to appeal both to commercial sensibility and ironic detachment - the score will be by Canadian alt-rockers Barenaked Ladies, the direction by Casey Nicholaw (who directed the mega-hit Book of Mormon), and the book by playwright Michael Mitnick.  Whether it proves a wacky, inspired genre-mash or a spiritless attempt to cash-in on the transgressive appeal of Book of Mormon is yet to be seen, especially since Broadway is infamous for blurring the line between a sure thing and a monumental flop.
