Adele gives the finger to the BRIT Awards
The only thing even approaching controversy at Tuesday's BRIT Awards came when Adele flipped off the producers when her acceptance speech for the Album of the Year got cut short so the broadcast could cut away to Blur's show-ending performance. Interestingly, photos of the incident show that she gives the American-style middle finger rather than that old British classic, the V-sign. Success has changed that girl.
Given that the hostess had just reeled off a list of Adele's accomplishments that fairly staggers the imagination -- 21 is the biggest selling album so far this millennium, with a copy being purchased in average every 6.5 seconds -- it just seems a bit rude not to let the poor girl finish her sentence. It's not like Damon Albarn's got anyplace else he's got to be tonight, Blur can wait another few seconds.
The night's other big winner was Ed Sheeran, who is what would happen if Jason Mraz thought he had hip-hop credibility. He took home British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. (UK actor-writer Simon Pegg nailed the rumple-haired Sheeran perfectly when he tweeted "I can't believe Ron Weasley's up for Best Album!") The fact that Coldplay, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Foo Fighters took home the night's other major awards suggests that the voting bloc of the BRIT awards buy all of their music next to the cash register at Starbucks.
Multiple videos of the incident have been uploaded to Youtube, but are being removed just as fast for copyright violations. Also, this is almost sure to become a Facebook virus by the weekend, so don't click on any suspicious links, kids.
