A Nation at War installation now at MoMA
Earlier this week, MoMA unveiled a ten-part conceptual video installation called "9 Scripts from a Nation at War"-a work that marks the first collaboration between German photographer Andrea Geyer, performance artist Sharon Hayes, video/photo/mapping-based artist Ashley Hunt, Danish visual artist Katya Sander, and video artist/photographer David Thorne. Thematically, the piece explores the ways in which individuals are cast in various roles within the context of a war-specifically, the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003-and its global implications.
One of the more noteworthy elements of this installation is that although the respective backgrounds of work (mediums, approaches, etc) by each of the collaborating artists are very different. Yet here, because of the nature of the installation with its various moving parts and complex thematic thread, the differences and overlaps between the artists in their collaboration might actually seem to work to the piece's advantage.
