Critical 5 art events this week in NYC: new year new art, Jan. 9-12
Put the ginger bread cookie down and step away from the footie pajamas. The holidays are over and it’s time to get to real life. Bummer. But don’t the massive sugar crash get you down, it’s a new year filled with new art. So here’s what should be first on your list for 2013.
Shake the post holiday blues with another celebration. Inventing Abstraction, 1910 - 1925 celebrates the centennial of abstract artwork. From artists like Vassily Kandinsky to Marcel Duchamp and from mediums like paintings to sound poems, this exhibit is just the right amount of stimulation to stir you from your slumber.
Christian Marclay: The Clock at MoMA
Stick around at MoMA to catch Christian Marcaly's popular cinematic collage The Clock, which unfolds on screen in real time through film excerpts that form a 24-hour period. Now only on view during the weekends until January 21st. Don't miss this winter time special (you can pretend it's a holiday special if you really want to).
American Legends at the Whitney Museum of American Art
Another survey exhibition, American Legends: From Calder to O'Keeffee highlights the leading artists of the first half of the 20th century. Become engrossed in the 18 artists showcased and we guarantee you'll forget all about those honey-baked ham withdrawals.
Mary Ellen Mark: Prom at Janet Borden Gallery
Mary Ellen Mark: Prom documents 13 proms from 2006 to 2009 using a 20x24 Polaroid Land Cameras. No cheesy smiles or bad 80's dresses, this exhibit will give you something to smile about in the New Year.
The Art of Scent at the Museum of Arts and Design
It may not be the smell of chestnuts roasting but this exhibit will take your noise to some pretty places. The Art of Scent focuses on twelve fragrances made between 1889 and 2012. Delicious.
