One small step for man, one giant leap for Penguin Books
That’s right, Penguin Books is prepared to stage one of the craziest stunts in literary history. In less than two weeks, the publishing giant may be sending a book into space.
The book causing all the hubbub is Shades of Earth, the final installment in the dystopian/sci-fi/romance trilogy Across the Universe, about two teenagers travelling through space to a new Earth. Author and New York Times Best Seller Beth Revis actually came up with the promotion herself.
Don’t start the countdown yet though, because there is a catch to all of this. In order for the book to boldly go where no book has gone before, Shades of Earth has to be preordered more than the first and second books in the trilogy combined. With the books official release being January 15th, they’re getting down to the wire. But, according to Revis’ blog she “really, really, really” thinks the quota can be reached.
Sure the whole idea is fairly gimmicky, but it is creative and good press for Penguin, which is still recovering from a rocky year and definitely looking forward to a merger with fellow publishing company, Random House.
