Arts and Leisure

Album | Baby Grand (music group)
By Stewart Mason

Wistful female-fronted indie pop gems.

Four albums into their low-profile career, Baby Grand have carved out a nice little niche as a Bay Area equivalent to Camera Obscura. Sighing female harmonies, gently strummed acoustic guitars, brushed drums, subtle strings and an overall sense of wistfulness drive these 12 songs. And yet even when the proceedings turn to carefully-enunciated French, complete with a touch of boulevardier-style accordion, on "Quand Tombent les Ombres," Arts and Leisure is never merely twee. The melodies are uniformly strong, and the production and arrangements give the album a sense of stylistic variety: the girl-group touches of "Can't Keep Us Apart" are particularly nice.
