Young and Old

Album | Tennis (band)
By Chris Payne

Indie duo add some gloss.

Fitting snugly amongst ever-so-preppy indie pop bands like Vampire Weekend and Princeton, it seems it's just about time for Tennis to have their moment. The husband-wife duo of Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley first hit the scene in 2010, releasing a series of beach-poppy (often sailing-themed) singles on labels like Underwater Peoples and Firetalk in preparation for their debut LP, 2011's delightful Cape Dory. After barely a year of heavy touring, the couple headed back into the studio with Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney producing. The result? A record that's stylistically similar to Cape Dory, understandably with a bit more production gloss. Tracks like "Origins" and "Petition" recall the glistening harmonies of seminal Supremes and Crystals singles channeled through modern-day indie pop aesthetics. Although the album peaks with its opening song (the glamorous "It All Feels The Same"), there isn't a dud to be found here, which is quite an accomplishment for a young band who've written so much music in such a brief time. And as luck would have it, the lovey-dovey Young and Old just so happens to be coming out on Valentine's Day.
