WHB

Album | We Have Band
By T. Cole Rachel

London electro trio make long-awaited full-length debut.

Since starting up in 2007, the London-based trio We Have Band have teased the music world with a series of weirdly infectious electro-pop singles. One might expect that the band’s debut, WHB, would deliver a much larger dose of the same. Surprisingly, the record is a much wilder concoction, equal parts electrified, bass-heavy dance jams and synthy, soulful pop songs. Even more surprising, the best tracks here (like “How to Make Friends”) could be cut from the same cloth as early '80s post punk and moody new wave. “Hear it in the Cans” and “Honeytrap” might have been made for the dance floor, but poppier tunes like “Love, What You Doing?” and “Buffet” could be the long-lost love children of Hot Chip and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. We Have Band’s knack for quirky arrangements, along with a penchant for trading off vocal duties from song to song, make this a refreshingly inventive pop record, and one that appeals to the feet and the heart in equal measure.
