Album | Bedhead
By T. Cole Rachel

Slowcore pioneers make their noisy debut.

While Bedhead will likely always be known as the progenitors of “slowcore” (a strain of indie rock based on minimalism and melancholy) the band’s 1994 debut is actually a reasonably rocking affair. Tracks like “Haywire” and “Living Well” build to not-so-quiet storms of guitar noise that would make even Mogwai proud. Still, the strength of brothers Matt and Bubba Kadane’s songs lie in their simplicity. “Liferaft” and “Crushing” are built on gently dueling guitar lines and perfect melodies, buoyed by subtle sing/speak vocals and moments of well-placed silence. A million other bands would go on to adopt a similarly mellow formula, but few bands have ever executed the fine art of restraint as intelligently as Bedhead.
