Underneath the Pine

Album | Toro Y Moi
By T. Cole Rachel

The exact opposite of the sophomore slump.

Chaz Bundick, the mastermind behind Toro Y Moi, is often considered responsible for pioneering the blink-and-you'll-miss-it chillwave sensation that swept the world (or, at least, Brooklyn) in early 2010. On his second full-length album, Bundick smartly moves beyond the moody synthscapes that held sway over the excellent Causers of This and flirts with disco. "Still Sound" and "New Beat" are funk by way of Boards of Canada, while "How I Know" and "Light Black" could be outtakes from the last Caribou record. More than any of his peers, Bundick proves himself to be a sonic adventurer on Underneath the Pine. The record is a bizarre mashup of ghostly synths and funky live instruments, disparate sounds that shouldn't logically go together at all but somehow sound logical and beautiful when piled up together in Bundick's songs.
